LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A disturbing demonstration unfolded on Saturday outside a community theater in Livingston County, Michigan, where masked individuals waved Nazi flags and shouted antisemitic slurs during a performance of The Diary of Anne Frank. Attendees, gathered to witness a story about the Holocaust’s impact on innocent lives, found themselves amid a hateful display that shocked and unsettled the community.

Fear Outside the Theater

The demonstrators appeared outside the American Legion Post 141 in Howell as audience members attended the theater’s production of The Diary of Anne Frank. Eyewitnesses reported that several masked men were waving Nazi flags and voicing antisemitic and racist remarks.

For many of the 75 theatergoers inside, the atmosphere turned tense and frightening. Some attendees were reportedly hesitant to leave the venue after the performance, requiring escorts to reach their cars safely.

Further reports from residents of Fowlerville, a nearby town, described similar incidents. One local witness recalled seeing a group waving Nazi flags and shouting offensive chants, including troubling references to Nazi Germany. The individual, who encountered the demonstrators at a stoplight, reported them to local authorities, causing the group to quickly disperse.

Theater Group Responds to Incident

The Fowlerville Community Theatre, which organized the performance, issued a statement reflecting on the event’s impact on both the audience and the cast. The theater group highlighted that the play centers on real people who were persecuted in the Holocaust and emphasized that the protest provided an unsettling glimpse into the fear that Holocaust victims might have experienced.

By presenting Anne’s story, the theater group hopes to build awareness and empathy, aiming to prevent historical atrocities from repeating.

Antisemitism on the Rise Nationwide

This incident reflects a broader trend in antisemitic actions and sentiments both locally and nationally. Similar demonstrations have occurred in Livingston County in recent months, including a White supremacist march in Howell over the summer.
