LINCOLN, NE – Nebraska and corn go together like peanut butter and jelly. It’s no wonder we’re called the Cornhusker State! But have you ever stopped to think about why this crop is so important to Nebraska? Turns out, corn has been shaping our history for centuries.

🌽 A State Built on Corn

Sure, we might be known for exporting beef and soybeans these days, but corn is still the first thing that pops into most folks’ minds when they think of Nebraska. Last year, farmers planted over 9.6 million acres of the stuff across the state. That’s a whole lot of corn!

🌾 The Perfect Place to Grow

So, what makes Nebraska such a great spot for growing corn? For starters, we’ve got the ideal soil for grains. But the real secret is the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the world’s biggest sources of freshwater. It lets farmers irrigate their fields, giving the corn the perfect conditions to thrive.

Now, the aquifer might be huge, but it’s not invincible. It supplies water to 30% of the country’s crops, and all that use has taken a toll. In the last 75 years, the aquifer’s volume has dropped by nearly 10%. If we drain it completely, it could take 6,000 years to fill back up!

🌿 A Tradition as Old as Time

Industrial farming might be the latest chapter in Nebraska’s corn story, but it’s far from the first. Long before we were even a state, Indigenous folks like the Pawnee, Omaha, and Oto were growing corn alongside squash and beans. They called this tasty trio the “Three Sisters.” These folks were the first to domesticate corn, and we owe them a big thanks for kickstarting an industry that rakes in almost $10 billion a year for Nebraska.
