Minneapolis, Minnesota – Today we spotlight Nellie Stone Johnson, whose incredible journey as an African American leader in unions and civil rights is nothing short of inspiring.
Born in Minnesota to Dakota County farmers in 1905, Johnson’s early life in a family that valued racial and religious tolerance set the stage for her lifelong fight for economic security through unions and education, especially for African Americans and women.
Her story begins on a farm where her father, a member of the Nonpartisan League, taught her the importance of organizing for fair prices and economic growth. Moving to Minneapolis for high school, Johnson faced workplace discrimination head-on as an elevator operator. Yet, she believed in the power of unity, learning the ropes of organizing under the guidance of radical thinkers and activists of her time.
Johnson’s efforts alongside notable African American leaders and workers changed the game in the 1930s and 40s, transforming the hotel and restaurant industries in Minneapolis. Her leadership in negotiating contracts, fighting for equal pay, and pushing for integrated facilities showcased her dedication to justice and equality.
Her political acumen shone through her involvement with the Farmer-Labor Party and the United Labor Committee, where she championed the causes of full employment, health insurance, and affordable housing. Johnson’s pragmatic approach helped merge the Democratic and Farmer-Labor Parties into the DFL, advocating for a coalition that embraced labor and civil rights.
Even as the civil rights movement gained ground, Johnson continued to make waves, contributing significantly to the establishment of Minneapolis’s first Fair Employment Commission, advocating for fair employment and housing laws, and supporting groundbreaking political campaigns.
