ST. PAUL, MN – August is sizzling with new airline routes, offering exciting travel opportunities for those looking to squeeze in a late summer getaway or start planning their fall adventures. This month, budget airlines are leading the charge, expanding their networks and offering competitive fares. Here’s a breakdown of the most notable new routes launching in August.
Sun Country Airlines Boosts Minneapolis Options
Sun Country Airlines is adding two new routes from its Minneapolis-St. Paul hub. Beginning August 8, the airline will fly to Monterey, California, and starting August 22, it will connect Minneapolis with Manchester, New Hampshire.
These routes are less frequent, but with one-way fares between $69 and $79, Sun Country is the only airline serving these destinations.
Frontier Airlines Expands Its Reach
Frontier Airlines is aggressively expanding with seven new routes starting mid-August.
The airline is adding flights from Atlanta to Boston and Los Angeles, Boston to Charlotte and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), New York (JFK) to Las Vegas, and Sacramento to Los Angeles and San Diego. These routes will be operated daily, with introductory fares ranging from $19 to $69 one way.
Frontier is directly challenging major competitors like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines on these well-traveled routes.
Spirit Airlines Adds More Connections
Spirit Airlines is also expanding its network with two new routes this month. Starting August 13 and 14, Spirit will connect Fort Lauderdale with Rochester, NY, and link Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) with Houston Bush.
The Fort Lauderdale-Rochester route offers one-way fares ranging from $39 to $41, while the DFW-Houston route has fares starting at $20. These additions put Spirit in direct competition with American, Frontier, and United on the DFW-Houston route, while Southwest covers the cities from nearby Dallas Love and Houston Hobby airports.
United Airlines Rebuilds San Francisco Services
United Airlines is resuming its flights from San Francisco to Detroit and St. Louis starting August 19.
Both routes were suspended early in the pandemic but are now returning with up to two flights a day. Fares for the San Francisco-Detroit route range from $204 to $573 one way, while the San Francisco-St. Louis route offers fares from $175 to $493.
Southwest Airlines Reopens Albany-Las Vegas Route
Southwest Airlines is bringing back its route between Las Vegas and Albany, New York, on August 5.
The route, which was last operated in 2019, will once again provide direct service between the two cities. Airfares for the Albany-Las Vegas route vary significantly, with prices ranging from $265 to $785 one way, depending on the travel date.
American Airlines Eyes Fall Foliage with Quebec City Route
American Airlines is introducing a new route from Charlotte to Quebec City starting August 10.
This weekly Saturday flight will improve connectivity between the southern United States and Quebec, making it easier for travelers to experience the vibrant fall foliage in the region. Fares for this route range from $304 to $413 one way.
Starlux Enters the Seattle-Taipei Market
Starlux Airlines is launching a new route between Seattle and Taipei on August 16, joining three other airlines on this busy route. Starlux will operate three flights a week, with economy fares ranging from $520 to $831.
This expansion into the Seattle-Taipei market marks Starlux’s continued growth in the competitive international travel scene.
Airline Updates Amid Regional Tensions in Middle East
In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have made significant adjustments to their flight schedules.
Delta has extended its suspension of flights between New York’s JFK and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport through the end of August, while United Airlines has removed its Tel Aviv flights from the schedule altogether.
Both airlines had initially paused these routes in October due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas but had resumed services in the spring and summer.
With the situation in the region remaining unstable, other international airlines, including Lufthansa and Air India, have also suspended flights to Israel and neighboring areas.
The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory, urging citizens to reconsider travel to Israel due to the unpredictable security situation and ongoing civil unrest.
These changes reflect the ongoing challenges airlines face in responding to global events, underscoring the importance of staying informed about travel advisories and airline policies when planning international trips.
