EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – A chaotic scene unfolded at a New Jersey hotel on Thursday when a man allegedly set fire to his room following a heated dispute with staff, and then assaulted an employee as he fled the scene. The fire caused significant damage but, fortunately, no injuries.

The Incident

At approximately 11:24 a.m. on Thursday, the East Rutherford Police Department and East Rutherford Fire Department responded to a call from the Fairfield Inn, where reports indicated that a guest had intentionally started a fire in his hotel room.

Upon arriving, authorities discovered that the suspect, 55-year-old Vincente Carabello, had already fled the scene.

Firefighters swiftly evacuated guests and brought the fire under control. The building’s sprinkler system was triggered by the blaze, causing widespread water damage throughout the hotel, but there were no reports of injuries related to the fire itself.

Investigation and Charges

Following the incident, law enforcement officials, including detectives from the East Rutherford Police Department and arson investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, launched a joint investigation into the fire. Their findings suggested that Carabello intentionally set the fire after a dispute with hotel staff.

As part of the investigation, authorities confirmed that the fire caused significant damage to the hotel.

Carabello also allegedly assaulted a staff member as he fled the scene, though the employee was not seriously injured. Carabello now faces multiple charges, including aggravated arson, arson, criminal mischief, risk of causing widespread injury or damage, and assault.
