ORANGE COUNTY, NY – A New York homeowner’s backyard just became a mini paleontological hotspot. While outside, they stumbled upon an unusual sight: two teeth sticking out of the soil. What followed was an unexpected journey back to the Ice Age, as researchers uncovered a nearly complete mastodon jaw—an exciting find that hasn’t happened in the state in over a decade.

Discovery in Orange County

The discovery took place in Scotchtown, New York, when a homeowner noticed two teeth sticking out from the soil in their backyard, hidden beneath some plant fronds. Upon closer inspection, two more teeth were found just below the surface. The find prompted an investigation by experts from the New York State Museum and SUNY Orange.

The team quickly uncovered a complete adult mastodon jaw along with a piece of toe bone and a rib fragment. The fossils are set to undergo carbon dating and further analysis to determine the mastodon’s age, diet, and habitat.

Significance of the Find

Dr. Robert Feranec, director of Research and Collections and curator of Ice Age Animals at the New York State Museum, expressed excitement about the discovery. He said, “This mastodon jaw provides a unique opportunity to study the ecology of this magnificent species, which will enhance our understanding of the Ice Age ecosystems from this region.”

Dr. Feranec further emphasized the importance of fossils in reconstructing ancient ecosystems, adding that they provide “remarkable snapshots of the past” and help in understanding today’s world.

Dr. Cory Harris, Chair of SUNY Orange’s Behavioral Sciences Department, also weighed in on the find, noting that while the jaw was the most notable discovery, the additional toe and rib fragments offer valuable context for ongoing research.

He stated, “We are also hoping to further explore the immediate area to see if there are any additional bones that were preserved.”

A Hotspot for Mastodon Fossils

More than 150 mastodon fossils have been found across New York, and Orange County is particularly significant. Roughly a third of these fossils have been discovered there, making it a known hotspot for this ancient species. Mastodons, closely related to modern elephants, roamed the region during the Ice Age, leaving behind traces that continue to intrigue scientists.

The homeowner, whose identity has not been released, shared their excitement over the discovery.

“When I found the teeth and examined them in my hands, I knew they were something special and decided to call in the experts,” the homeowner said.

“I’m thrilled that our property has yielded such an important find for the scientific community.”

What’s Next for the Fossils?

Once fully analyzed and preserved, the fossils will be featured in public programming at the New York State Museum in 2025. Michael Mastroianni, the Interim Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education at the museum, expressed pride in the institution’s role in preserving such discoveries.

“As stewards of New York’s history, we are dedicated to advancing research that deepens our understanding of the state’s natural legacy,” Mastroianni said.

He added that the museum’s mission is to inspire future generations through its scientific research.

This exciting discovery adds a new chapter to New York’s rich paleontological history, with researchers hopeful that more finds may emerge from the area.
