The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Trooper Mascia noticed a black Dodge Charger parked on the median near Exit 17 in West Hempstead and pulled over to check on the vehicle and its occupant. However, as he approached, he was suddenly struck by gunfire, with bullets hitting him in the leg. Despite his injury, Mascia was able to report his situation over the police radio, relaying that he believed his kneecap might be broken.
Trooper Mascia Undergoes Emergency Surgery After Shooting
Emergency responders quickly transported Trooper Mascia to Nassau University Medical Center, where he underwent immediate surgery to address his injuries.
According to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the 27-year-old trooper was in “good spirits” after his operation and showing remarkable resilience as he begins his recovery.
