FARMINGDALE, NY – A terrifying scene unfolded late Monday night when a driver plowed her SUV into a Chinese restaurant in Farmingdale, New York—almost exactly a year after a similar crash at the same spot. The crash ignited a fire and left two people hospitalized, sparking eerie memories of the previous year’s wreck involving a drunk driver.

Hyundai SUV Slams Into Restaurant After Colliding with Parked Cars

The accident happened around 11 p.m. on Monday as a 57-year-old woman drove her 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe northbound on Broadway in the Farmingdale area of Long Island. According to the Nassau County Police Department, the woman lost control, and her vehicle veered off the road.

The speeding SUV crashed into a parked 2017 Ford Mustang with a 30-year-old man inside before slamming into a 2022 Volkswagen Jetta. The Hyundai didn’t stop there—it barreled straight into the Great Wall Chinese restaurant in a local strip mall on Boundary Avenue.

SUV Bursts Into Flames, Firefighters Rush to Contain Blaze

The Bethpage Fire Department quickly arrived to battle the blaze sparked by the crash. Photos and videos posted by the fire department reveal a mangled Hyundai crushed against the restaurant’s entrance, engulfed in flames.

Thankfully, the fire was “quickly” put out, but officials said flames did spread slightly into the building, causing what they described as “minor” damage.

Both the SUV’s driver and the man inside the Mustang were rushed to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities did not provide specific details on their injuries, but no other injuries were reported.

A Chilling Echo of Last Year’s Incident

Adding to the eerie nature of the accident, the Bethpage Fire Department recalled a nearly identical event in January 2024.

“Ironically, in January 2024, we were alerted for a similar type of incident at the same location,” the department confirmed.

In that case, a driver allegedly under the influence crashed a Mercedes into an unoccupied Toyota, sending the Toyota smashing partway into the restaurant. The Mercedes driver, Lauren Potter, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not released further information on the cause of Monday night’s crash, and the incident is currently under investigation.
