CHICAGO, IL — A former school worker from Illinois, convicted of stealing $1.5 million worth of food, primarily chicken wings, has received unexpected support from an NFL player. Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Tackle Chris Jones recently made headlines with his offer to pay for the stolen chicken wings in an attempt to secure the release of Vera Liddell from prison.

Details of the Theft

Vera Liddell, who served as the food service director for Harvey School District 152, was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday after pleading guilty to a felony theft charge.

The district, located approximately 22 miles south of Chicago, includes five schools with a total enrollment of 1,600 students. Over 80% of these students are considered low-income, making the theft of resources meant for them particularly impactful.

The Scheme Uncovered

Cook County prosecutors accused Liddell of orchestrating a scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic when students were learning remotely. Liddell allegedly ordered and picked up over 11,000 cases of chicken wings using a school district cargo van.

However, these wings never made it to the students. The discrepancy was uncovered by the district’s business manager during a routine audit, which revealed invoices signed by Liddell for large quantities of chicken wings—a food item that was never part of the school’s menu due to its bone content.

Chris Jones’ Offer and Legal Implications

On Tuesday, Chris Jones took to social media, offering to cover the cost of the stolen wings in hopes of facilitating Liddell’s release. Despite this gesture, legal experts indicate that such an offer is unlikely to impact her sentence.

The criminal justice system will proceed according to the law, regardless of outside influence.

Liddell’s attorneys have stated that neither Chris Jones nor representatives from the Kansas City Chiefs have contacted them regarding the matter.
