VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL ā Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood isnāt pulling any punches. Heās fed up with the spike in hoax school threats and heās making it clear that both parents and kids will face serious consequences.
At a news conference Friday, standing alongside Volusia Public Schools officials, Chitwood gave a blunt warning: parents need to take responsibility, or law enforcement will step in.
āThis is absolutely out of control, and it ends now,ā Chitwood declared, frustrated by the surge in false threats. He noted that 54 threats were reported in less than 24 hours through the Fortify Florida app, which allows residents to report suspicious activity. So far this year, 207 threats have been reported.
āThat means investigators in the school district have been running around the clock to investigate these tips, which are all turning out to be false. So far, itās cost $21,000 to do these investigations,ā Chitwood said.
Holding Parents Accountable
But thatās not the end of it. Chitwood didnāt mince words about the responsibility parents bear in all this. He made it very clear what would happen if parents failed to control their children.
āSince, parents, you donāt want to raise your kids, Iām going to start raising them. Every time we make an arrest, your kidās photo is going to be put out there,ā Chitwood promised. āIf I can any way find out that a parent knew what was going on and wasn’t doing anything, your ass is getting perp walked with ’em.”

Message to the Kids: Youāre Not That Smart
The sheriff also had a direct message for the kids responsible for the hoax threats: āFor the little bastards out there that think this is funny, haha, I’m gonna get on social media: you ain’t that smart ā¦ You’re getting caught. And they’re getting caught within minutes, or hours, of them posting it. So they’re not that brilliant to begin with.”
Chitwood also revealed that seven people have been arrested for written threats to kill, and 11 weapons have been found on public school campuses this year.
His frustration comes at a time when school threats have spiked across the country, especially following a tragic incident in Georgia, where a 14-year-old student fatally shot two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School.
In a final plea, Chitwood pointed to the seriousness of the issue, urging parents and kids to understand the gravity of their actions. āGo talk to the families who have lost a loved one in a school shooting. These little knuckleheads think itās funny. Go talk to those parents and see how funny this is. Itās not.”
