WILMINGTON, NC – A shocking case of family betrayal has ended with a North Carolina man facing up to 22 years behind bars. Authorities say 63-year-old Marshall Todd Anderson bludgeoned his 83-year-old father to death, then attempted to hide the gruesome crime by covering the body with a tarp in the victim’s backyard. On Monday, a New Hanover County judge sentenced him to a prison term of 18 to 22 years for the brutal 2024 killing of William Thomas Anderson.
Disturbing Discovery Leads to Arrest
Deputies responded to a family member’s welfare check request around 8 p.m. on February 22, 2024, at a residence on the 900 block of Marlowe Drive in Wilmington.
The call came from a concerned relative who had not heard from William Anderson and feared something was wrong.
When authorities arrived, they searched the property and made a horrifying discovery—the elderly man’s lifeless body, concealed under a tarp in the backyard. Officials later confirmed he had been dead for at least 12 hours, and his cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.
Investigators quickly turned their focus to Marshall Anderson, who had vanished from the scene before deputies arrived.
A search led them to a location near S. College Road, where Anderson was spotted walking near a Best Buy. He was taken into custody on the spot and held without bond at the New Hanover County Detention Facility.
Family Member’s Suspicion Uncovered the Crime
Court records reveal chilling details about the hours leading up to the discovery.
The victim’s grandson had gone to check on his grandfather, concerned about his worsening dementia. When he arrived, he found his father, Marshall Anderson, already there. Anderson insisted that the elderly man had been around just moments earlier, but something felt off.
As the grandson searched the home and yard, Anderson made an unsettling remark—telling him not to disturb a blue tarp in the backyard, claiming it was just trash. Ignoring the warning, the grandson continued searching the neighborhood and called 911.
By the time law enforcement arrived, Anderson had fled. Investigators later learned he had asked a neighbor for a ride to Walmart upon spotting the flashing lights of approaching patrol cars.
Courtroom Drama and Family’s Heartbreak
During sentencing, members of the victim’s family took the stand, describing the devastation caused by Anderson’s actions.
The grandson, who first grew suspicious and called for help, spoke about the emotional toll of the crime. He expressed sorrow over the painful reality that his grandfather was murdered by his own son, and the damage that addiction and poor choices had inflicted on their family.
Now, with Anderson sentenced to nearly two decades in prison, justice has been served—but the scars left behind will never fully heal for this North Carolina family.
