There’s a small but remarkable town in southwest Minnesota. It’s called Luverne. With a population just shy of 5,000, Luverne might seem like your typical Midwestern town, but it holds a fascinating secret. My hubby Jack and I have performed shows at the Palace Theater in Luverne, Minnesota several times over the years, and it’s always such a fun town to explore!

Nestled along the scenic Rock River, this charming community is not just the county seat of Rock County; it’s a place where the whimsical and the historical intertwine. Luverne gained national attention through the 2007 Ken Burns documentary “The War” and more recently as the setting for the acclaimed TV show “Fargo.” But what really sets Luverne apart is its extraordinary collection of nutcrackers.

Nutcracker Collection: Luverne’s Unique Attraction

At the heart of this nutcracker fascination is the Rock County Historical Society, home to an astounding permanent collection of over 5,300 nutcrackers. Imagine walking through a kaleidoscope of nutcrackers of every shape, size, and color, each with its own story, hailing from different parts of the world.

But the nutcracker magic doesn’t stop there. Throughout Luverne, businesses and residents join in the fun, displaying nutcrackers year-round. For a little adventure, visitors can partake in a scavenger hunt to find the names of over 130 nutcrackers scattered across the town. And if that’s not enough, Luverne hosts a variety of nutcracker-themed events throughout the year, making it a must-visit destination for anyone intrigued by these charming figurines.

The Nutcracker Exhibit: A Community’s Pride

In 2016, the Rock County Historical Society made a move that would forever change the cultural landscape of Luverne. While relocating to a new building, the Board of Directors sought a unique attraction to distinguish their museum from countless others across the country. Their solution? A fascinating exhibit featuring a stunning collection of nutcrackers.

This remarkable journey began with the generosity of Betty Mann, who donated her personal collection of 2,800 nutcrackers. The exhibit, thoughtfully arranged to highlight the diversity and beauty of these figurines, immediately captured the imagination of visitors. From the tiniest miniatures to imposing eight-foot statues, the variety is astonishing, and notably, there are no duplicates. This collection represents a global tapestry, with nutcrackers of every imaginable shape, size, and color, each with its own unique backstory.

A standout feature of the museum is a dedicated section celebrating Tchaikovsky’s iconic 1892 Nutcracker Ballet, complete with musical dolls that transport visitors to the magical world of the ballet. The collection, which started with Betty Mann’s generous donation, has continued to grow. Inspired by the idea of having more nutcrackers than residents in Luverne, the Historical Society has expanded the collection to over 5,300 as of January 2023, surpassing the town’s population of 4,946.

The Story of Betty Mann and the Nutcrackers

Betty Mann’s journey with nutcrackers began at a time of personal loss. After losing her husband and daughter in 2000, she found solace in these charming figurines. Her collection, which started with a single nutcracker purchased for six dollars at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in South Dakota, has grown into a town treasure. Typically dressed in nutcracker-themed attire, Mann delights in sharing the stories behind her favorite pieces, from nutcrackers that witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall to a Lego nutcracker made by her great-grandson.

The origin of these wooden dolls dates back to late 17th-century Germany, with mass production beginning in 1872. Once predominantly wooden soldiers, they now encompass a vast array of characters and themes, reflecting changing times and cultures.

But for Mann, this was never just about creating a nutcracker museum. Her vision was to draw people into Luverne and the museum, turning a simple visit into a memorable experience. This strategy has worked wonderfully, as Wendel Buys, the executive director of the Rock County Historical Society, notes that two-thirds of their visitors come primarily for the nutcrackers. Once inside, they’re captivated by the other exhibits, revealing the rich local history of Luverne.

The collection has also been bolstered by contributions from others, like Robert Black of Sioux Falls, who donated around 1,300 nutcrackers, some purchased during his time in Germany. Black’s pride is evident when he sees his own contributions on display, enjoyed by a new generation of visitors.

As the collection continues to grow, Mann reflects on its impact, acknowledging that while not everyone in Luverne may be fond of nutcrackers, the exhibit has successfully drawn people into the museum, achieving her primary goal.

The Palace Theater, a historic gem in downtown Luverne, is a cornerstone of the city’s cultural scene. Built in 1915, this 550-seat theater was originally a venue for silent films and live theater. Its architecture, crafted by W.E.E. Greene, and the interior decor, including painted wall panels and stage curtains, retain much of their original charm and elegance.

The Palace isn’t just a visual treat; it’s also home to a piece of musical history. The theater’s original Geneva Organ Company theater organ, installed in 1926, was used to provide music for silent movies. This organ, having been meticulously restored, is not only a rare example of its kind still in its original location but also the oldest working theater organ of its make and model in the United States.

The building’s second story, once a ballroom and later an apartment for the original owners, now serves as a gallery, housing pictures and furniture from the early days of the Palace Theater. In recognition of its historical significance, the Palace Theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

A Theater Haunted by Friendly Ghosts

We have played several shows at the Palace Theater over the years, and it’s always a thrill to take the stage at this historic landmark! 

Locals told us that the theater is actually haunted by a couple named Herman and Maude, a real-life couple that graced the stages in 1915 or so. These two lovebirds are still said to be hanging around, messing with the lights and generally keeping people on their toes. So, if you find yourself taking in a show at the Palace, keep a watchful eye out for these friendly spirits!
