NEW YORK, NY – A former New York bank manager was sentenced to nearly 10 years in federal prison for hiring a purported hitman to murder her brother-in-law, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced Wednesday.
Reshma Massarone, 40, was sentenced to 114 months in prison plus three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to murder-for-hire.
“The defendant devised a chilling plan to have a member of her own family murdered for the low price of ten thousand dollars. Her plan was unthinkably heartless. For this depraved crime, Reshma Massarone will spend 114 months in federal prison,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement.
According to court documents, Massarone plotted with a person identified only as Individual 1 between July 20, 2023, and Aug. 16, 2023, to hire a hitman to kill her brother-in-law in return for $10,000. Individual 1 was a member of a foreign police force, however, and became an undercover agent to develop evidence against Massarone.
In “dozens” of social media messages and phone calls with Individual 1, Massarone pleaded with them to kill her brother-in-law or hire someone else who would.
Massarone then wired $2,500 to Individual 1 for a down payment for the hitman. Surveillance video captured Massarone at a Western Union counting out 25 $100 bills to make the payment.
After wiring the down payment, Individual 1 told Massarone that the hitman planned to shoot the intended victim and there was “no turning back.” She replied, “Right. No turning back.”
Of course, the victim was never murdered, and as he remained alive, Massarone grew impatient with Individual 1. She urged Individual 1 to murder the victim themselves, saying that “rat poison can do a great job.”
“You is all talk and no action,” Massarone told Individual 1. “Come on do the thing and I will take care of you,” referring to the remainder of the payment.
Massarone then threatened to find someone else to carry out the killing, stating, “Either way, if I find somebody to do the job youâre going to get blame, so cut the bullshit and letâs get it done.â
