OAKLAND, CA – An East Oakland father is in critical condition after being struck by a stray bullet while sleeping in his home. The incident, which occurred on August 1st in a public housing complex, has left 33-year-old Run Hua Kuang, known to his loved ones as Hua, fighting for his life on life support.

This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community support in times of crisis. As we read about Hua Kuang and his family’s struggle, let us remember to lift them up in prayer, asking for God’s healing hand to be upon Hua and for strength and comfort for his loved ones during this unimaginable time.

A Search for the American Dream Ends in Tragedy

Hua Kuang immigrated to the United States from Taishan, China, in 2005, driven by the hope of finding the American Dream for his family.

He worked as a delivery truck driver, tirelessly providing for his wife of seven years, their two young daughters—aged seven months and three years—and his elderly parents. His life was characterized by discipline and devotion to his family.

On the afternoon of August 1st, after returning home from work, Hua took a nap. While he slept, a bullet pierced through the wall of his apartment, struck his headboard, and went straight through his head, exiting through his left eye.

The source of the bullet is believed to be from an adjacent apartment within the same building.

Community in Shock and Fear

The shooting has shocked the East Oakland community, with neighbors expressing their fear and disbelief over the incident. Many described Hua as a hardworking, friendly man who was deeply committed to his family.

The apartment from which the bullet is suspected to have been fired is known to be frequented by young individuals, raising concerns about safety and gun violence in the neighborhood.

Residents reported hearing a single gunshot and were initially unsure of its origin. It soon became apparent that the bullet came from within the building itself, a fact that has left many in the community feeling unsafe.

Hua’s Struggle for Survival

Following the shooting, Hua underwent a grueling seven-hour surgery and is now on life support in the intensive care unit. His sister, Jasmine Kuang, shared the devastating impact this tragedy has had on the family.

Hua, as the sole provider and the only English speaker in the household, played a crucial role in managing the family’s responsibilities and communications. His absence has created a severe financial burden, further exacerbated by the emotional toll of the incident.

No Arrests Made, Investigation Ongoing

Despite the gravity of the situation, no arrests have been made so far. Witnesses reported seeing police detain an adult woman and a teenage boy from the apartment where the gun was allegedly fired, but the investigation is still ongoing.

The Housing Authority, which manages the complex, is collaborating with Oakland police to resolve the case.
