COLUMBUS, OH – It’s a miracle! A high-speed chase ended with the safe recovery of an abducted Ohio toddler and the arrest of the suspect. Authorities described the tense pursuit and eventual rescue of a 3-year-old girl taken from Ohio, following a collaborative effort between police in multiple states.
First Alerts of Abduction and Suspectâs Location
On Saturday, the Columbus Division of Police in Ohio alerted the Nebraska State Patrol about a potential child abduction case. The authorities reported that a 3-year-old girl was believed to be traveling westbound on I-80 in Nebraska with a suspect identified as 27-year-old Diego Revilla Gonzalez, driving a GMC Sierra.
Nebraska State Patrol troopers soon spotted the vehicle near Overton, mile marker 245, and attempted to make a traffic stop. But instead of stopping, Gonzalez sped away, evading officers by passing vehicles on the shoulder of the highway.
The chase escalated as Gonzalez pushed speeds close to 100 mph. Concerned for the safety of the young child and other drivers on the road, troopers temporarily halted the pursuit and notified additional agencies, the Nebraska State Patrol stated.
âOut of concern for the child and other motorists on the road, troopers discontinued the pursuit and [issued] alerts to other law enforcement agencies about the situation,â according to the official statement.
Renewed Pursuit and Narrow Escapes
Dawson County 911 soon received reports of the suspect vehicle traveling northbound on Cozad Road, continuing into Custer County before turning westbound on Highway 40. Troopers reengaged the pursuit, deploying stop sticks to disable the vehicle, but Gonzalez evaded them and pressed on. Law enforcement attempted a second deployment of stop sticks near the intersection of Highway 40 and Highway 47.
As the suspect approached the roadblock, authorities said he veered off the road, steering his vehicle directly toward one of the troopers. “The trooper was able to run out of the way to avoid getting struck,” the Nebraska State Patrol confirmed. Despite close encounters and evasive maneuvers, Gonzalez continued his escape attempt, now traveling along Highway 92.
Final Capture and Safe Recovery of the Child
The chase concluded when Gonzalez drove off Highway 92, crashing through a fence and coming to a halt in a field after the truck became disabled. Troopers quickly surrounded the vehicle and took Gonzalez into custody without further incident.
He now faces multiple charges, including flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, child abuse (no injury), attempted assault on an officer, and a series of traffic violations. The young girl was taken into protective care, awaiting reunification with her mother.
Through a combined response across states and agencies, authorities ensured the safe recovery of the child and the apprehension of the suspect.
