STILLWATER, OK – A desperate attempt to make it to a court date left an Oklahoma man facing even more legal trouble after he allegedly stole a vehicle to get there. The irony? The court date was for a previous vehicle theft charge.
Man Desperate for a Ride Resorts to Theft
Last month, Kody Adams found himself at a gas station in Stillwater, asking strangers for a ride to Pawnee County, where he was scheduled to appear in court for possession of a stolen vehicle.
After failing to find anyone willing to help, Adams allegedly noticed an emergency vehicle—a LifeNet ambulance supervisor’s car—left running and unattended. Authorities say Adams decided to “borrow” the vehicle and head to court.
Emergency Vehicle Taken From Gas Station
Local law enforcement quickly became aware of the missing vehicle. According to reports, first responders had a hunch about where it might be. As Adams arrived at the courthouse, he abandoned the vehicle and was promptly spotted by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer.
Trooper Ryan Long, who was on the scene, approached Adams and questioned him. Adams allegedly admitted to taking the emergency vehicle, claiming he only “borrowed” it to make his court appearance. Trooper Long took Adams into custody on the spot.
Court Appearance Followed by Arrest
After escorting Adams to his scheduled court appearance, the officer brought him back to Payne County Jail on fresh charges related to the theft of the emergency vehicle.
In a humorous social media post, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol acknowledged the bizarre turn of events, pointing out that it’s not every day someone shows up to court for a stolen vehicle charge by stealing another one.
Now, Adams finds himself facing additional legal consequences for his latest misstep, all because he couldn’t find a ride.
