CINCINNATI, OH – With Christmas on the horizon, folks in Cincinnati and across the Ohio Valley can’t help but wonder if holiday snowflakes might be on the way. Forecasters are still sorting out the details, while people across the nation watch their local forecasts for clues. Will this Midwestern region wake up to snowy streets—or find itself enjoying a milder, quieter morning?
Looking Back: The Chances of a White Christmas
If you’re wondering whether you’ll get a snowy holiday, looking at historical weather data can offer some insight. NOAA’s extensive records highlight which areas typically experience snow on December 25 and which ones are less likely.
While the 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a milder winter in many areas, there are still some places where snow may make a festive appearance.
Northeast and Great Lakes
In northern regions like Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin, winter often arrives early enough to bring snow on Christmas. In Minneapolis, the chance of a white Christmas is about 80%, while northern Michigan and Minnesota usually see snow on three out of four holidays. In the White Mountains of New Hampshire, it’s close to 97%, and northern Vermont ranges from 75% to 95%. Heading toward Boston, however, the chance drops to around 20%.
Western United States
In the West, snow chances depend on elevation and moisture levels. Missoula, Montana, has an impressive 98% chance, while Idaho City near Boise is at 94%. Salt Lake City has a 50% chance, and in Colorado, snow chances vary: about 40% to the east of Denver, but up to 77% southwest of Boulder. Flagstaff, Arizona, is also in the mix, with a 44% chance of snow.
Lower Chances in Other Regions
For much of the rest of the country, snow on Christmas is less common. Areas like the Plains, Mid-Atlantic, South, and parts of Texas and Oklahoma often experience mild weather. Washington, D.C., for instance, has only a 6% chance of snow, which shows that not everyone will wake up to a snowy Christmas morning.
Forecast by Region
The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac suggests that most regions will likely miss out on a white Christmas. Northern Maine may see snowflakes, but New England is expected to stay snow-free. The Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Southeast, Florida, Lower Great Lakes, and Upper Midwest also have low chances. However, there’s a slight possibility in the Ohio Valley and better odds in the Heartland. Areas in the High Plains north of I-70 and parts of the Rockies could also see snow. While snow is expected in Alaska, Hawaii will remain warm and snow-free this holiday season.
How Cincinnati and the Ohio Valley Fit In
Cincinnati, sitting in the Ohio Valley, falls into a region with a slight chance for a white Christmas this year. While it’s no guarantee, the odds look better here than in many southern or coastal areas. There’s reason to keep an eye on the forecast as December 25 draws near—winter might just surprise you.
Wrapping It Up
For Cincinnati and the Ohio Valley, the door to a snowy Christmas isn’t wide open, but it’s not completely shut either. Whether or not flakes drift down on the holiday, the season brings its own warmth, cheer, and festive spirit. Keep the forecast handy, and who knows—you might just wake up to a shimmering scene outside your window. Merry Christmas!
