CLEVELAND, OH – As Christmas draws closer, everyone in Cleveland, Ohio and across the Lower Great Lakes region is wondering if December 25 might bring a snowy scene. Forecasters are weighing the possibilities, and as different parts of the nation brace for their own forecasts, this city’s residents are left to wonder: Will a festive flurry greet them this year—or will the season remain mild?
Christmas Weather Predictions for 2024: Snow or No-Go?
Excitement is growing across the U.S. as people watch the skies and weather reports, hoping for a snowy Christmas. While some central states may get their wish, The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a generally milder winter for much of the country.
Chances of a White Christmas: What History Tells Us
Historical weather patterns can offer clues. NOAA’s decades of data reveal which areas are most likely to wake up to a snowy holiday and which ones aren’t so lucky.
Snowy Favorites: Northeast and Great Lakes
In the far northern regions, like northern Maine, Minnesota, and parts of Michigan and Wisconsin, early snow often lingers through December. Minneapolis boasts an 80% chance of snow most years, while areas in northern Michigan or Minnesota see flakes three out of four Christmases. Northern Vermont’s odds range from 75% to 95%, and New Hampshire’s White Mountains top the list with a near 97% chance. Moving closer to the coast, cities like Boston see much lower odds, around 20%.
The West: A Snow-Lover’s Dream
In the western U.S., location and elevation play big roles. Missoula, Montana, has a near-guaranteed 98% chance of snow, while Idaho City, close to Boise, sits at 94%. Salt Lake City’s chances drop to about 50%. In Colorado, areas east of Denver hover near 40%, but regions southwest of Boulder rise to 77%. Even in Flagstaff, Arizona, there’s a respectable 44% shot at a snowy Christmas.
Where Snow is Rare
In much of the South, the Plains, and the Mid-Atlantic, snow on Christmas is a long shot. Washington, D.C., for instance, has only a 6% chance. Warm temperatures usually keep these regions snow-free during the holiday season.
The Forecast by Region
The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac suggests that many areas will miss out on Christmas snow. Northern Maine might be an exception, but much of New England, the Atlantic Corridor, the Appalachians, and the Southeast are expected to remain mild. The Lower Great Lakes, Upper Midwest, and Ohio Valley face slim chances, though the Heartland and northern High Plains could see snow. The Rockies also stand a decent chance of holiday flakes.
Meanwhile, the Desert Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Pacific Southwest are likely to stay warm. Alaska can count on snow, but Hawaii will stay true to its tropical vibes.
How Cleveland and the Lower Great Lakes Fit In
Cleveland, sitting in the Lower Great Lakes region, typically doesn’t enjoy high odds of a white Christmas under this year’s forecast. Although historically the city can see snow one out of every three Christmases, current predictions lean mild. The odds are not zero, but they aren’t strong either.
Wrapping It Up
For Cleveland, the dream of a white Christmas might not become reality this time around. While other parts of the nation vary widely, this region is expected to remain quieter and likely snow-free on December 25. Still, holiday cheer doesn’t rely solely on flurries—there are plenty of ways to celebrate, no matter what the weather brings. Merry Christmas!
