COLUMBIA, SC – As Christmas approaches, folks in Columbia and across South Carolina are wondering if there’s any chance a few flakes might flutter down on December 25. Forecasters continue to weigh the possibilities, while other parts of the country brace for their own weather scenarios. Will this stretch of the Southeast wake up to a snowy scene—or find itself enjoying a mild, calm morning?
Will Snow Grace Christmas 2024? Here’s What to Expect
Many across the U.S. are wondering the same thing. Some regions are more likely to see snow than others, with the 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicting a milder season overall.
To get a clearer idea of what to expect, it helps to look at historical snowfall data. Decades of information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provide insights into which areas typically see snow on Christmas Day—and which don’t.
Northeast and Great Lakes Regions
For states like Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin, snow often arrives early and sticks around through the holidays. In Minneapolis, there’s about an 80% chance of snow, while Northern Michigan and Minnesota usually see snow on three out of four Christmases. The White Mountains in New Hampshire have an impressive 97% chance, and northern Vermont ranges between 75% to 95%. However, closer to the coast, such as in Boston, there’s only about a 20% chance.
Western U.S. Snowfall Predictions
In the Western U.S., snowfall depends largely on altitude and moisture. Missoula, Montana, is almost guaranteed to have snow, with a 98% chance, while Idaho City near Boise has a 94% chance. Salt Lake City sees a 50/50 chance of snow, and in Colorado, snow chances vary: there’s a 40% chance east of Denver, but it rises to 77% southwest of Boulder. Flagstaff, Arizona, has a 44% chance of snow.
Low Snow Chances in Other Areas
Many other regions have very slim odds of a white Christmas. The Plains, much of the Mid-Atlantic, the South, and areas like Texas and Oklahoma often experience milder conditions. Washington, D.C., has only a 6% chance, highlighting just how rare snow can be in these parts.
The Christmas Forecast by Region
The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac forecasts that most areas won’t see snow this Christmas. Northern Maine may get some, but snow will be scarce across the rest of New England. Areas along the Atlantic Corridor, the Appalachians, the Southeast, Florida, and parts of the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest are likely to be snow-free. The Ohio Valley has a slight chance, while the Heartland may see some flakes. Regions north of I-70 and parts of the Rockies are expected to experience snow. The Pacific Northwest, Pacific Southwest, and northern Arizona may stay dry, but Alaska is expected to enjoy a classic white Christmas, and Hawaii will not.
How Columbia and the Southeast Fit In
Columbia and the surrounding Southeast generally aren’t known for snowy Christmas mornings, and this year’s predictions stick to that pattern. While some central regions might be smiling under a layer of fresh snow, it’s more probable that Columbia will enjoy mild, pleasant conditions come December 25.
Wrapping It Up
If a white Christmas was on your wish list, it may not pan out in Columbia this time around. Still, the spirit of the season doesn’t rely on snowfall. Even without flakes, the holidays can bring warmth, joy, and bright memories to carry into the new year. Merry Christmas!
