Northeast and Great Lakes

In the northern U.S., states like Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin tend to see snow early and hold on to it through the holidays. Minneapolis has an 80% chance of snow, while northern Michigan and Minnesota are nearly guaranteed snow three out of four years. The White Mountains of New Hampshire approach 97%, and northern Vermont ranges from 75% to 95%. On the East Coast, Boston’s chances are much slimmer, at about 20%.

Western United States

In the West, elevation plays a big role in whether snow will fall. Missoula, Montana, boasts a 98% chance of snow, while Idaho City near Boise has a 94% chance. Salt Lake City is around 50%. In Colorado, the odds change with elevation: east of Denver, it’s about 40%, but southwest of Boulder, it jumps to 77%. Even Flagstaff, Arizona, sees a 44% chance.

Other Areas with Lower Chances

For most of the rest of the country, snow isn’t likely. The Plains, Mid-Atlantic, South, and Texas-Oklahoma regions tend to stay snow-free. Washington, D.C., for instance, only has a 6% chance of snow.

What to Expect for Christmas Travel

According to The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac, many areas will see little to no snow this holiday season. While northern Maine might hold on to its snowy traditions, much of New England is expected to miss out on a white Christmas. The Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Southeast, Florida, Lower Great Lakes, and Upper Midwest are all likely to stay snow-free.

The Ohio Valley has a slim chance, while the Heartland stands a better chance of snow. Areas in the High Plains north of I-70 and the Rockies may wake up to a snowy landscape. Northern Arizona, the Desert Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, and Pacific Southwest are expected to stay warm. Alaska, on the other hand, should see snow, while Hawaii will not.

How Omaha and the Heartland Fit In

Nebraska, situated in the Heartland, is among the fortunate spots that appear more likely to enjoy a white Christmas this year. While many parts of the country may remain free of snow, this region could see a winter scene right out of a holiday postcard when December 25 arrives.
