Will this corner of the Southeast wake up to a snowy scene—or find itself enjoying a milder Christmas morning?

Christmas 2024 Weather: Will Snow Be Part of the Celebration?

Across the U.S., many are eagerly checking their weather forecasts to see if Christmas will bring snowy scenes or simply clear skies. Some regions in the central part of the country may have a better chance of snow, while the 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a milder winter for much of the nation.

Northeast and Great Lakes

In states like Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin, snow often arrives early and sticks around, setting up the possibility for a snowy Christmas. In Minneapolis, the chance of snow is about 80%. In northern Michigan and Minnesota, roughly three out of four years experience snowfall on Christmas. The White Mountains in New Hampshire boast an impressive 97% chance, while northern Vermont sees snow about 75% to 95% of the time. Farther south, in cities like Boston, the likelihood drops to just around 20%.

Western United States

In the West, snow chances are strongly influenced by elevation and moisture. Missoula, Montana, has a near-certain 98% chance of snow, while Idaho City, close to Boise, stands at 94%. Salt Lake City’s chances are around 50%. Colorado’s snow prospects vary by region; east of Denver, it’s about 40%, but to the southwest of Boulder, the odds rise to 77%. Even Flagstaff, Arizona, typically enjoys a 44% chance.

Lower Odds for Snow Elsewhere

In regions outside of these snow-prone areas, the likelihood of a white Christmas drops. The Plains, much of the Mid-Atlantic, the South, Texas, Oklahoma, and neighboring states usually experience milder weather. Washington, D.C., for instance, has only about a 6% chance, which is pretty slim.

Holiday Outlook by Region

According to the 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac, many areas of the U.S. are unlikely to see snow this Christmas. While northern Maine could get lucky, New England as a whole is expected to miss out. The Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Southeast, Florida, Lower Great Lakes, and Upper Midwest are all forecasted to stay snow-free. The Ohio Valley has only a small chance, while the Heartland could be in luck. Areas north of I-70 in the High Plains and parts of the Rockies may see snow. However, the Pacific Northwest, Pacific Southwest, northern Arizona, and Desert Southwest are expected to remain snowless. Alaska is likely to experience snow, but Hawaii will not.

How Raleigh, North Carolina and the Southeast Fit In

Raleigh and the broader Southeast aren’t known for snowy Christmases, and this year seems no different. While some central regions might find their holiday dreams dusted white, the outlook here remains mild and mostly dry.

Wrapping It Up

If you’re hoping for a white Christmas in Raleigh, the odds don’t appear to be in your favor this time around. But even without snow on the ground, the holiday spirit can shine through. Whether it’s a frosty landscape or just a crisp morning, the season’s festivities will carry on just fine. Merry Christmas!
