Forecasters are still piecing together the puzzle, while other parts of the country brace for their own weather twists. Will this portion of the Atlantic Corridor wake up to a dusting of holiday snow—or find itself welcoming a milder morning?

Christmas 2024: What Are the Chances of Snowfall?

Across the U.S., families are anxiously watching the weather, hoping for a white Christmas. While some regions might have higher chances of snow, the 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a generally milder season for many.

Northeast and Great Lakes

In the northern U.S., places like Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin often see snow early in the season, with many locations keeping it through the holiday. For example, Minneapolis has an 80% chance of snow on Christmas. Northern Michigan and Minnesota experience a white Christmas around three out of four years. The White Mountains in New Hampshire have nearly a 97% chance, while northern Vermont ranges from 75% to 95%. However, as you move toward coastal areas like Boston, the probability drops to about 20%.

Western U.S.

Elevation plays a major role in the West’s chances for snow. Missoula, Montana, has an impressive 98% chance, and Idaho City near Boise comes in at 94%. Salt Lake City is around 50%. In Colorado, snow chances vary greatly—around 40% east of Denver and up to 77% southwest of Boulder. Even Flagstaff, Arizona, has a 44% chance of a white Christmas.

Lower Chances in Other Regions

For many parts of the U.S., snowfall is less likely. Areas like the Plains, Mid-Atlantic, South, and parts of Texas and Oklahoma usually experience milder temperatures as Christmas approaches. Washington, D.C., for example, has only a 6% chance.

What to Expect for Christmas by Region

The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac forecasts that much of the country will likely see a snow-free Christmas. Northern Maine could be an exception, but most of New England won’t get snow. The Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Southeast, Florida, Lower Great Lakes, and Upper Midwest are expected to remain dry. The Ohio Valley has a slight chance of snow, while the Heartland might get lucky with a few flurries. High Plains areas north of I-70 and the Rockies might see some snow, while northern Arizona and the Desert Southwest are expected to stay clear. The Pacific Northwest and Pacific Southwest should also be mild, while Alaska is likely to see snow. Hawaii, however, will not.

How Richmond, Virginia and the Atlantic Corridor Fit In

Richmond, positioned along the Atlantic Corridor, generally doesn’t get strong odds of a white Christmas. This year looks to follow that pattern. While some central and mountain regions might enjoy holiday flurries, Richmond is more likely to see calm, mild conditions as December 25 unfolds.

Wrapping It Up

In Richmond, the dream of waking up to snowy streets on Christmas morning may remain just that—a dream. Even so, the season offers its own kind of cheer. Whether or not flakes fall, the holidays bring warmth and celebration in many forms, ensuring that Christmas spirit can flourish without a single snowflake in sight. Merry Christmas!
