ST. LOUIS, MO – The Old Farmer’s Almanac has released its winter forecast, and St. Louis, Missouri may be in for a surprise this season. Typically known for harsh cold and heavy snow, the city might experience a warmer, drier winter this time around. If you’re used to bundling up, you may not need that heavy parka as often!

What Makes These Forecasts Different?

Unlike regular weather reports, the Old Farmer’s Almanac focuses on seasonal trends for its long-range forecasts. While daily weather can’t be predicted months ahead, the Almanac relies on global patterns to give an idea of what the season might bring.

The Almanac’s Forecasting Formula

The Old Farmer’s Almanac combines old-school techniques with modern science to create its predictions. They focus on three main areas:

  • Solar Science: Tracking sunspot cycles.
  • Climatology: Studying weather patterns across decades.
  • Meteorology: Monitoring atmospheric behavior.

With data stretching from 1991 to 2020, their forecasts highlight trends and solar cycles to offer a seasonal glimpse.

Expect a Warmer Winter in St. Louis

This winter, temperatures are forecasted to be milder than usual. While you’ll still have some chilly days, the harsh, bone-chilling cold that St. Louis residents are used to will make fewer appearances. Keep that winter coat handy, but it might not get as much use this year.

When Will the Chill Hit?

Even with the warmer outlook, a few cold snaps are expected. The chilliest spells are predicted for late January and both early and late February. These cold bursts will bring the lowest temperatures, but they won’t stick around for long. Most of the season should feel more like a reprieve from the typical St. Louis winter.

Snowfall Predictions: Don’t Expect Much

With higher temperatures come lower chances of snow. St. Louis should see less snowfall overall, with the heaviest flakes likely falling during those brief cold periods in January and February. Don’t count on much accumulation—this winter looks to be drier than previous years.

Why the Warmer Forecast?

The Sun is currently at the peak of Solar Cycle 25, creating increased solar activity that often correlates with warmer global temperatures. However, scientists note that this connection isn’t as strong as in the past.

Ocean-atmospheric cycles like El Niño and La Niña also play a role. This winter, conditions are expected to remain neutral, with a slight lean toward La Niña following last year’s El Niño. These factors, along with Atlantic and Pacific trends, shape the predictions for North America.

A Softer Winter for St. Louis

All signs point to a less severe winter for St. Louis, with both milder temperatures and lower precipitation levels. January and February will still bring some cold and snow, but those moments will be brief. While it’s always wise to prepare for winter weather, this season might offer a nice break from the typical Midwest freeze.

Please tell me where the harsh cold and heavy snow are located?
Oh wait, maybe you think two inches of snow would be considered heavy. Harsh cold maybe a week or so in January, and that’s only when a polar vortex passes through. But then a good portion of the country has harsh cold.
