Melissa stood in front of her fourth-grade class, her eyes scanning the room as she explained the day’s lesson on fractions. “So, if we divide this pizza into four equal parts, each part is called a quarter,” she said, drawing a circle on the board and slicing it into sections.

As the students nodded, Melissa’s gaze landed on Allison, who was scribbling notes in her notebook, her pedometer peeking out from under her sleeve. It was an unusual accessory for a fourth grader, and Melissa had noticed it every day since the school year began.

Later, during a reading session, Melissa walked around the room, pausing by Allison’s desk. “That’s an interesting gadget you have there, Allison,” she said, pointing to the pedometer.

Allison looked up, her eyes bright. “Oh, this? It’s my pedometer. It counts my steps!”

Melissa smiled. “That’s great! Staying active is important.”

As the weeks went by, Melissa noticed a peculiar routine. The classes took turns going out for recess, one after the other. When Allison’s class was coming back inside from playing, they would walk past another class on their way out to the yard. During this quick moment in the hallway, Allison would take off her pedometer and give it to her younger sister, Tiffany, who was in a different class. Tiffany would then wear it while she had her recess.

One day, as the students gathered in the cafeteria for lunch, Melissa saw Tiffany return the pedometer to Allison with a triumphant grin. “I got more steps than yesterday!” she whispered.

Melissa couldn’t contain her curiosity any longer. After lunch, she approached Allison. The pedometer was carefully strapped back on her wrist. “Allison, I’ve noticed you and Tiffany sharing that pedometer. Are you two keeping track of your steps for a competition or something?” she asked, her eyes twinkling with curiosity.

Allison smiled innocently, her eyes sparkling with helpfulness. “No, Miss Melissa. We wear it so Mommy can show it to Daddy when he gets home. So he can see she’s been exercising all day!”
