OAKLAND, CA – A bizarre scene unfolded in Madera County, California when authorities stopped a speeding Rolls Royce Ghost and discovered a baby spider monkey inside. The shocking find took place on Monday night during a DUI arrest, leading to a string of charges for the driver and an unlikely rescue for the tiny (and really adorable) primate.
DUI Stop Turns Into a Monkey Business
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stopped the luxury car for excessive speed on northbound State Road 99, just north of Avenue 17. What seemed like a typical traffic stop quickly spiraled into an unusual encounter.
According to CHP, the officer discovered “some next level monkey business” inside the vehicle: a young spider monkey, believed to be about 1 month old.
Arrested for DUI and More
The driver, who was allegedly intoxicated, was arrested for multiple offenses. These included DUI, possession of cannabis for sale, and possession of an exotic animal.
In California, owning primates as pets is illegal, adding a serious charge to the motorist’s list of troubles. Photos from CHP show the baby monkey wearing a onesie, surrounded by plastic bags filled with marijuana and several cell phones.
Monkey Moved to Oakland Zoo for Care
After the arrest, the baby spider monkey was taken by Animal Control. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife soon took possession of the animal and transported it to the Oakland Zoo for appropriate care.
The zoo, known for its work with endangered species, is now providing the necessary environment and medical attention for the young primate.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the situation and the baby spider monkey is healthy and happy at his new home.
