NORTH CHARLESTON, SC — A botched attack on a Tesla charging station erupted into an unplanned self-immolation Friday, as a South Carolina activist’s protest against Elon Musk and President Trump backfired spectacularly.
Federal authorities allege that James Island resident Daniel Clarke-Pounder, 24, unleashed havoc at a North Charleston parking lot, where he allegedly torched three electric vehicle chargers. The mechanic’s explosive protest included political messages scrawled across the scene, but his plan fizzled when one of his own incendiary devices reportedly set his clothing ablaze.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the suspect fleeing the scene with his back engulfed in flames after hurling multiple homemade explosive devices at the charging equipment. Clarke-Pounder, who has not been proven guilty of these charges, was apprehended following a public manhunt.
Growing Pattern of EV Attacks
The incident marks the latest in a string of attacks targeting Tesla facilities since Musk’s appointment as head of the Department of Government Efficiency.
Similar incidents have rocked facilities from Colorado to New York, where vandals have left their mark with inflammatory messages and destructive acts.
Legal Consequences
Acting U.S. Attorney Brook B. Andrews emphasized that while peaceful protest remains protected, violent acts cross a line that brings severe consequences.
Clarke-Pounder faces up to two decades behind bars if convicted.
Records show this isn’t his first brush with the law – he was previously arrested in May 2023 for driving violations.
Political Tensions
The attack comes amid heightened political discourse surrounding Tesla and its controversial CEO.
President Trump recently made headlines with a public display of support for Musk, announcing his intention to purchase a Tesla and praising the tech mogul as a patriot.
Clarke-Pounder appeared in federal court Friday afternoon. The extent of his injuries from the self-inflicted burns remains unclear. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
