CANNON BEACH, OR – A Saturday evening drive along Oregon’s scenic Highway 101 took a harrowing turn when a motorist veered off a cliff near Hug Point, plunging 100 feet before being trapped in the wrecked vehicle. The shocking incident set off an intense rescue operation that closed the highway for over two hours.
Stranded 100 Feet Below the Highway
At around 5:30 p.m., the Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District rushed to the scene after receiving an urgent report of a car that had gone over the cliff.
The location, Hug Point, is a popular coastal area known for its breathtaking views—but this time, those cliffs became the site of a life-threatening emergency.
When crews arrived, they spotted the vehicle crumpled far below the roadway.
One rescue team immediately rappelled down the rugged terrain, stabilizing the vehicle to prevent further movement before carefully extracting the trapped motorist.
Dramatic Rope Rescue Captured on Camera
Firefighters employed a complex rope system to hoist the victim back to safety, a process captured in photos and video shared by the fire department.
Once back on solid ground, Medix Ambulance paramedics evaluated the driver and transported them to a local hospital.
Miraculously, officials reported the injuries appeared to be minor.
Investigation Underway
For more than two hours, Highway 101 was closed to ensure the safety of both the rescue team and the stranded motorist.
By 8 p.m., the roadway reopened, allowing traffic to resume along the scenic coastal route.
Oregon State Police are now working to uncover the events leading to the crash.
