WINONA, MN – Father’s Day, a cherished celebration honoring the role of fathers in our lives, has a fascinating history that goes beyond the realm of greeting cards and gifts. This special day, observed annually on the third Sunday in June in numerous countries worldwide, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and India, has its roots in a tragic event that shook the nation.

🙏 Remembering the Fallen Fathers

The first recorded Father’s Day service took place on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, following the worst mining disaster in American history. The catastrophe claimed the lives of over 360 men and boys, leaving approximately 1,000 children without their fathers.

Grace Golden Clayton, the daughter of a devoted reverend, organized the Sunday service to pay tribute to the many fathers who perished in the mining accident, while also mourning the loss of her own father, who had passed away in 1896.

💪 The Perseverance of Sonora Smart Dodd

Although Clayton’s efforts did not result in an annual event or widespread promotion, the idea of celebrating Father’s Day gained momentum thanks to the determination of Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd.

Inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Dodd believed that fathers deserved recognition as well. Her own father, William Smart, had single-handedly raised his six children on his farm in Washington after the passing of his wife during childbirth.

Dodd proposed the idea of a “father’s day” to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA, suggesting June 5th, her father’s birthday, as the date for the celebration.

📅 Establishing a National Holiday

The concept of Father’s Day received enthusiastic support from the community, and the first official celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. This date, the third Sunday in June, became an annual tradition in the city and soon spread to other towns across the country.

Despite the growing popularity of the event, it took many years for Father’s Day to be recognized as a permanent national holiday. Bills were introduced in Congress as early as 1913, and Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Lyndon Johnson both expressed support for the cause.

Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law officially declaring Father’s Day a national holiday to be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June.
