SANTA MARIA, CA – When a big rig truck overturned and spilled a load of red peppers in California on Wednesday, first responders had to call in a bee swarm specialist after a hive was disturbed.
California Highway Patrol Santa Maria and the Santa Maria Fire Department responded to southbound U.S. 101 north of Main Street on Wednesday morning after a semi truck pulling a flatbed trailer overturned and spilled its load of red peppers across the highway.
The road was blocked for over an hour while the debris was cleared enough to resume traffic, but the crash disturbed a large beehive and created a “bee-mergency,” CHP said.
First responders called in Robert Dias from Swarm Catchers to gather the bees using a special vacuum so they could safely be relocated.
Dias “swooped in to save the day and safely relocate our tiny winged friends,” CHP said. “Talk about a sweet rescue! Thanks for making sure things didn’t get too sticky out there, Robert!”
