HANOVER, PA – A routine car accident call turned dangerous after a Pennsylvania man allegedly disarmed a police officer following two collisions within minutes, according to authorities.
Two Crashes in Five Minutes
The incident began on Friday, October 11, around 6:30 p.m., when 33-year-old Michael Hoopes allegedly crashed his 2010 Honda Civic into a Volkswagen Jetta. The collision occurred on Moulstown Road in Hanover Borough, involving a driver from Littlestown. Police confirmed that no one was injured, and neither car needed towing. Hoopes fled the scene before officers arrived.
Just five minutes later, Hoopes lost control of his Civic and crashed into a pole at the intersection of E. Middle and Factory Streets. When officers responded to the second crash, Hoopes reportedly admitted to trying to flee from the earlier collision and also acknowledged driving under the influence of alcohol.
Dangerous Confrontation with Police
According to the Hanover Borough Police Department, the situation escalated when a second officer arrived at the scene. Hoopes allegedly exited his vehicle, grabbed the first officer’s firearm, and made “comments about shooting the officer with the weapon,” as stated in the arrest affidavit.
Officers used “substantial force” to subdue Hoopes, deploying a stun gun to stop him from gaining control of the weapon.
Arrest and Charges
Hoopes was taken into custody and transported to Hanover Hospital for a blood alcohol test. He now faces several serious charges, including disarming a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, and accidents involving damage to attended vehicles.
Police have not released additional details about the investigation, but the swift response from officers prevented a potentially deadly situation from escalating further.
