NEWTON, PA – What started as a simple grocery delivery spiraled into chaos when an Instacart driver was shot by a Pennsylvania man who believed his home was under threat. The confusion unfolded on the night of January 18 in Newton Township, shocking residents of the usually quiet community.
The incident began when Nicholas Sabo, 43, reacted to movement near his garage, unaware that his wife had ordered groceries online.
According to police, Saboâs wife misunderstood the situation, thinking someone might be attempting to break into their trailer parked outside. That moment of miscommunication led to a tragic encounter.
A Split-Second Reaction
Law enforcement officers explained that Sabo, armed and alarmed, stepped outside to confront what he believed was a potential intruder. Without exchanging a single word, he opened fire on the delivery driver.
The driver, who was hit in both legs by a single bullet, managed to flee back to his car, where his wife and child anxiously waited.
Despite his injuries, the driver heroically drove a short distance before stopping to call for emergency assistance. He was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery, and is expected to recover.
A Preventable Tragedy
Authorities revealed that Saboâs wife had placed a grocery order through Instacart but hadnât informed her husband. When their homeâs security system detected movement outside, it added to the confusion. This misunderstanding tragically set off a chain of events that ended in gunfire.
Sabo was arrested at the scene and now faces charges of recklessly endangering another person.
