What’s Lurking on Your Fruits and Veggies? 😱🥗

Rochester, Minnesota – Brace yourself, because what you’re about to read might make you think twice about biting into that juicy strawberry or crunching on that crisp spinach leaf!

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just released their annual “Dirty Dozen” list for 2024, and the results are pretty alarming.

What’s the Dirty Dozen?

Every year, the EWG puts out a list of the 12 fruits and veggies that have the highest levels of pesticide residue. They analyze data from the USDA and FDA to figure out which conventional (non-organic) produce is the most contaminated. And let’s just say, the results aren’t pretty.

The Dirty Truth

Get this: a whopping 95% of the samples from the Dirty Dozen list had pesticides on them. That’s right, almost ALL of them! And overall, 75% of all the conventional produce tested had some kind of potentially harmful pesticide residue. Yikes.

The 2024 Dirty Dozen List

So, which fruits and veggies made the naughty list this year? Drumroll please…

Strawberries and spinach topped the chart, followed by kale, collard greens, mustard greens, grapes, peaches, pears, nectarines, apples, bell peppers, hot peppers, cherries, blueberries, and green beans.

If you’re a fan of any of these, you might want to consider going organic. It may be slightly more expensive: but isn’t the health of your family worth a few more pennies?

Fungus Among Us

The EWG found that four out of the five most common chemicals detected on produce were fungicides. These are used to prevent mold and fungal diseases, but some of them might be messing with our hormones, especially in men. More research is needed, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.

The Good News? The Clean 15!

But wait, there’s a silver lining! The EWG also puts out a “Clean Fifteen” list of the produce with the lowest levels of pesticide residue. Almost 65% of these had no detectable pesticides at all.

The list includes avocados, sweet corn, pineapple, onions, papaya, frozen sweet peas, asparagus, honeydew melon, kiwi, cabbage, watermelon, mushrooms, mangoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Phew!

Wash It Off

Now, before you panic and swear off fruits and veggies forever, remember that washing your produce can help remove some of the pesticide residue. The National Pesticide Information Center recommends washing under running water and scrubbing or peeling when possible. And even if you go organic, it’s still a good idea to give your produce a good rinse.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, experts say the benefits of eating fruits and veggies outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure. But if you’re worried, the EWG’s Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists can help you make more informed choices at the grocery store. And hey, if all else fails, just close your eyes and pretend those strawberries are pesticide-free! 😉
