Winona’s Beer Garden is Hopping

Hey guys!

My hubby Jack and I know a thing or two about where to find the best local vibes in our hometown. And we can’t help but spotlight Peter’s Biergarten—a tucked-away treasure situated right in the middle of downtown.

Chillin’ in this 3rd Street beer garden, my mind drifts to Budapest’s ruin bars. 🍻✈️

While on a world tour as musicians, we stopped through Hungary and had the pleasure of seeing Budapest’s ruin bars. These cool open-air bars are repurposed from old, neglected buildings in the city’s Jewish Quarter. 🍻🏚️

They transform spaces left vacant from WWII into bustling community hubs. It’s all about honoring the past and creating new spaces for folks to connect.

So it’s exciting to see that, like those ruin bars, Winona’s flipped a plot scarred by fire into a cozy spot for everyone.🏞️

The History Behind the Hops

Ah, picture this: a giant pretzel in one hand, and in the other, a stein filled with cold, frothy beer. You’re lounging in an open space surrounded by laughter and chatter.

Yep, you’re in a beer garden. 🍻

But did you know this scene dates back to the 19th century in Germany? These chill spots started as brewery extensions with long tables and benches. 🍺

The U.S. got its first taste of a beer garden around 1866, and since then, they’ve been the Sunday Funday HQ for many!

My hubby Jack and I live in Winona, Minnesota and – as locals – we’ve become experts of all things Winona. In fact, if you are planning a weekend getaway to this charming river town, don’t miss this related article: Ultimate Guide from a Local: Things To Do in Winona, Minnesota.

American Twist

American beer gardens are a little different from their German ancestors. 🇺🇸

They’re more than just beer; they’re community hubs that welcome families, and even feature live music and lawn games.

Gone are the days when only men hung out in taverns. American beer gardens have diversified and evolved, yet they still retain a sense of their original German charm.

The Gilded Age to Today

During the glitz and glamour of America’s Gilded Age, big breweries like Miller and Schlitz built lavish beer gardens complete with concert halls and bowling alleys. 🎳

Prohibition dampened the fun for a bit, but today, the culture is back, baby! 😜

Modern beer gardens have hitched a ride on the craft brewery and foodie trends, often inviting local food trucks and BBQ joints to join the party. 🌮
