UPLAND, CA – A suspected thief’s getaway took a disastrous turn when she lost control of her vehicle and tumbled down an embankment while trying to evade police. Authorities say the California woman attempted to steal more than $3,000 worth of merchandise from a pharmacy before making a desperate escape that ended in a crash.
Theft at 24-Hour Pharmacy Sparks Police Chase
The chaos began around 2:30 a.m. Friday when officers with the Upland Police Department responded to reports of a theft in progress at a 24-hour pharmacy near Foothill Boulevard and Mountain Avenue in Upland, east of Los Angeles.
According to police, the suspect loaded up multiple carts with stolen items but only managed to flee with one, stuffing the stolen goods into a red Kia Soul before speeding away.
High-Speed Escape Ends in Disaster
Police quickly spotted the Kia heading south on Mountain Avenue in what they described as “heavy traffic.”
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop, leading authorities on a chase that continued onto the 10 Freeway.
The suspect exited at Fairplex Drive and headed north into the hills near Brackett Field Airport in La Verne.
Her escape ended in disaster when she entered an RV park, misjudged a turn, and slid down an embankment into thick bushes.
Video Footage Captures the Crime and Chase
Authorities released surveillance and body-worn camera footage showing the suspect inside the pharmacy as she loaded up her cart, as well as the dramatic pursuit that followed.
Stolen Goods Recovered, Suspect Arrested
Police took the woman into custody at the crash site. She was not identified by name, but officers confirmed that $3,145.14 worth of stolen merchandise was recovered from her vehicle.
Authorities have not yet released further details about potential charges.
