CAMDEN COUNTY, MO – A Missouri police officer and mother of six, Phylicia Carson, 33, was killed in a high-speed chase early Sunday morning. Carson, who was patrolling in Camden County near the Lake of the Ozarks, lost control of her patrol car while pursuing a speeding vehicle.

In the midst of this tragic loss, let us find solace in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reminds us that God is the “Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,” who comforts us in our troubles. May we hold the Carson family close in our prayers, trusting that God’s grace will bring them strength and peace during this heartbreaking time.

According to Osage Beach Police Chief Todd Davis, Carson activated her lights and began the pursuit around 1:20 a.m. when the suspect, Christopher Aaron Bishop Wehmeyer, 23, fled. During the chase, Carsonā€™s vehicle skidded off the road and crashed into a tree, igniting upon impact.

Carson was pronounced dead at the scene. Efforts to reach her following the crash were unsuccessful. Wehmeyer crashed shortly after and was apprehended. He faces charges of aggravated fleeing a stop or detention of a motor vehicle, resulting in death, and is held without bond in the Camden County Jail.

The tragic incident marks the Osage Beach Police Departmentā€™s first line-of-duty death in 30 years. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

In response to the incident, Missouri Governor Mike Parson and Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe extended their condolences to Carson’s family, her department, and the community. Parson described Carson as a memorable figure, while Kehoe emphasized the bravery of law enforcement officers.

Carson, who joined the department in June 2023, is survived by her husband, Grant Carson, and their six children. The community and department are mourning the loss of a dedicated officer.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made by law enforcement, let us remember 1 Timothy 2:1-2, which urges us to “pray for all people, for kings and all those in authority.” Praying for our police officers is a way to seek Godā€™s protection and guidance for them as they serve and protect our communities. May our prayers support their safety and courage in their daily duties.
