Duluth, Minnesota – Did you know that Minnesota has a hidden invention that’s loved all across the country? Yup, it’s true – Pizza Rolls were born right here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes!
That fact that Pizza Rolls were invented in Minnesota comes as a surprise to many.
The story begins with Jeno Paulucci, a proud Italian-American and entrepreneur from the Iron Range in northern Minnesota. He worked his magic in Duluth, and you can still find his old building near the Aerial Lift Bridge and Grandma’s.
First, Paulucci hit it big with Chun King, where he brought “Americanized” Asian foods to our plates. He sold Chun King for a whopping $63 million in 1966.

Then came Jeno’s brand of frozen foods, including frozen pizza. But the real game-changer was when they mixed the idea of pizza with an egg roll, creating the delightful Pizza Roll.
Jeno’s Pizza Rolls became a massive success, and he sold the brand to Pillsbury in 1985 for a tasty $135 million. Pillsbury later sold them under the Totino’s brand, another Minnesota creation.
