ODESSA, TX – Two people were killed and multiple structures caught fire when a plane crashed in Texas Tuesday morning, officials said.
The Cessna Citation business jet crashed in Odessa at around 7:00 a.m., shortly after taking off from Odessa-Schlemeyer Field Airport, the city said in a statement.
“There was a large fire after some explosions,” Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis told reporters in a video posted on the City of Odessa’s Facebook page.
“Witnesses have said they saw the plane struggling to get altitude, clipped on the power lines her on the south side of Yukon [Road],” Griffs said, before the plane crashed “mostly” in the alley between Alderfer Avenue and Stevenson Avenue.
“It’s obvious the pilot attempted to avoid the houses,” Griffis said. “It’s a sad day in Odessa.”
Despite apparently trying to avoid homes, the crash caused fires at shops and some nearby mobile homes. Odessa Fire Rescue responded to the scene and rescued one woman from a burning trailer. She was transported to a hospital, the city said.
The two people who were killed were both on the plane.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
