PORTLAND, OR – Three people were killed when a small plane crashed into a row of townhomes in a suburb of Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, and multiple families were displaced, officials said.

A Cessna 421C plane “experienced mechanical issues” before crashing into a row of townhomes near Heartwood Circle in Fairview, about 15 miles northeast of Portland, at around 10:20 a.m. Saturday, the Gresham Fire Department said in a statement Sunday.

Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis confirmed that the pilot and a passenger were killed, along with one person who lived in one of the townhomes. Their identities were not publicly released.

The plane crashed near Troutdale Airport, reportedly striking a power pole before hitting the townhomes, sparking a brush fire. The crash also caused a fire in two structures, which spread to four structures, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

At least five families were displaced, according to fire officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
