INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A recent fatal officer-involved shooting at an Indianapolis, Indiana motel has captured public attention, as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) released bodycam footage showing the moments leading up to the deadly encounter. The footage sheds light on the tragic incident that occurred on the morning of August 23, 2024, when IMPD officers were serving a warrant at the Park Terrace Motel in Lawrence. The suspect, 40-year-old Kentrail Small, was fatally shot during the operation, which was part of a narcotics investigation.
Officers Arrive at Park Terrace Motel to Serve Warrant
At approximately 10:35 a.m., officers from the IMPDās narcotics division, along with SWAT, arrived at the Park Terrace Motel in the 9000 block of Pendleton Pike. Their mission was to serve a warrant for Kentrail Small, a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous. According to the department, police made their presence known by using sirens and a public address system, but they received no response from the suspect after their announcements.
The bodycam footage reveals officers forcing entry into the motel room after the lack of response. They gave clear commands to those inside to “get on the ground,” but the situation quickly escalated when Small and a woman emerged from the bathroom. As the officers moved toward Small, they began issuing urgent commands, warning each other of a weapon.
A Struggle and Fatal Outcome
As officers tried to detain Small, the situation intensified. According to the bodycam footage, officers saw Small attempting to reach for a firearm during the physical struggle. Amid the chaos, officers shouted “gun, gun, gun,” signaling the imminent threat. Two SWAT officers responded by firing their weapons at Small.
The altercation ended with Small being struck by gunfire. He was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was later pronounced dead. The woman who was present in the motel room complied with police instructions and was not injured during the incident. Fortunately, no officers or uninvolved citizens were harmed.
Narcotics Seized and Ongoing Investigation
Following the shooting, authorities recovered a variety of illegal substances from the motel room. The drugs included fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, and prescription pills. This discovery underscores the severity of the operation, which was primarily focused on addressing narcotic-related offenses.
As standard procedure, the officers who discharged their weapons were placed on administrative leave pending an internal review. The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team has taken the lead on the criminal investigation, while the departmentās Internal Affairs division is conducting a separate administrative inquiry. Additionally, the Use of Force Review Board, which is civilian-majority, will hold a mandatory hearing once the criminal investigation is completed.
While the tragic events of August 23 have left many questions unanswered, law enforcement continues to assess the details of the incident carefully. Itās important to recognize the dangerous and high-pressure situations officers face every day while working to keep our communities safe.
The brave men and women of law enforcement risk their lives to protect us, and their actions, as seen in this case, are part of their commitment to public safety. The outcome of the investigations will determine whether the officersā actions were justified, but one thing is clear: these officers were doing their jobs to protect the public from a potentially dangerous individual.
