Cincinnati, OH – Imagine walking through the streets of a bustling Roman city, exploring the daily lives of its people. Now, you can experience it for yourself in Ohio – at the Cincinnati Museum Center’s latest exhibition, “POMPEII: The Exhibition.” This incredible display brings the ancient city back to life, giving visitors a glimpse into a world that was lost nearly 2,000 years ago.
A City Frozen in Time
On August 24, 79 A.D., the city of Pompeii was forever changed when Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the city in ash and preserving it for centuries. Through 150 authentic artifacts on loan from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy, the exhibition tells the story of this once-thriving Roman city.
Experience Life in Ancient Pompeii
As you enter the exhibit, you’ll be transported back in time to 79 A.D. The reproduced atrium of a Roman villa serves as your gateway to the ancient city. From there, you’ll discover how the people of Pompeii lived, loved, worked, worshipped, and entertained themselves at the height of the Roman Empire.
Immerse Yourself in History
The exhibition is a media-rich, object-based immersive experience that brings the city to life. You’ll witness holographic gladiatorial combat, a brand-new 3D experience that takes you through the different stages of the Mount Vesuvius eruption. You’ll also see over 150 authentic artifacts, including mosaics, frescoes, gladiator helmets, household objects, jewelry, medical instruments, and tools.
Witness the Devastating Power of Nature
The exhibit culminates in a simulated 4D eruption theater that allows you to experience the deadly impact Mount Vesuvius had on the city. You’ll see the reveal of full body casts of twisted human forms, forever frozen in time by the extreme heat and noxious gases from the eruption.
