Looking for a mix of Midwest charm and mysterious allure? Rock Lake in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, is your spot. 📍

Just a 30-minute drive east from Madison, this place seems like any typical Midwest lake—kids splashing, families boating, and anglers casting their lines.

But hold up! 🛑

There’s way more to this place than just sun and fun.

Layers Upon Layers of History

Founded in 1836 by Captain Joseph Keyes, Rock Lake was initially home to a sawmill and a grist mill. Now, it’s known as the “Bermuda Triangle of Wisconsin.” 🔺🐄

Why?

For starters, there are local myths about an ancient, submerged city, a lake monster named Rocky, and, wait for it… underwater pyramids! 😲

In case you’re wondering, Rock Lake covers 1,365 acres and has a max depth of 60 feet. We’ve visited this region of Wisconsin many times while on tour as musicians. Rock Lake is beautiful, for sure. 🏊‍♀️

But the main attraction? The supposed pyramids at the bottom! 🚣

Some say they’re the work of Aztecs or maybe even people from Atlantis. Could it be true? 🤔

A Look Back: The Aztec Connection

What’s the deal with the Aztec connection? 🗿

Nearby Aztalan, Wisconsin, got its name from legends suggesting that Aztecs lived there. Some archaeologists believe that may not be the case, however. The debate rages on!

According to these tales, they built pyramids to end a drought in 1066. Spoiler alert: The drought ended alright, but it flooded the place, creating Rock Lake. 🌧️

Unraveling the Theories

Fact-check time! The Aztecs were in Mexico between 1300 and 1521. So, the timeline’s a bit shaky. 🤷‍♂️

Nonetheless, settlers in the 1840s and locals in the 1900s reported odd stone structures beneath the lake.

Fast-forward to the 1930s, and divers began exploring, some even claiming to see hieroglyphics! 😮

Over the years, explorers and journalists have used sonar scans and the world’s first SCUBA gear to unravel the lake’s mysteries. 🏊‍♂️
