ST. PAUL, MN – What would you do if you were on a family vacation, comfortably buckled in for a long flight, when suddenly, every screen on the plane starts playing a movie that’s definitely not safe for kids—or anyone, really That’s exactly what happened to passengers on a recent Qantas flight. Thanks to a technical glitch, an explicit movie was broadcast to every seat with no way to turn it off, leaving families and travelers in shock.
Technical Glitch Turns Family-Friendly Flight Into a Nightmare
On what should have been a normal flight from Sydney, Australia, to Haneda, Japan, things went off track when the in-flight entertainment system malfunctioned. Instead of offering passengers their usual choice of movies, the crew had to pick one film to play on every screen, after asking travelers for their preferences. Unfortunately, that selection ended up being Daddio (2023)—a provocative drama starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn that is rated R for graphic sexual content.
Some viewers have said this film is more explicit than Dakota Johnson’s other works – including the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.
Passengers were left stunned as the movie’s explicit scenes, which included nudity and sexually charged text messages, unfolded across all the screens. There was no option to pause, dim, or turn off the screens, leaving passengers, especially those with kids, in a very uncomfortable situation.
Racy Content Causes Outrage
The movie’s graphic content, including exposed genitals and sexting scenes, was far from appropriate for an airplane full of families. One passenger, horrified by what was happening, took to Reddit to describe the situation.
“Qantas played an inappropriate movie to the whole plane, there was no way to turn it off,” the passenger wrote. “It featured graphic nudity and a lot of sexting—the kind where you could literally read the texts on screen without needing headphones.”
It took almost an hour of these awkward scenes before the crew finally changed the film to something more kid-friendly. By then, the damage was done, and passengers were left questioning how such a mistake could happen in the first place.
Qantas Responds: ‘We Sincerely Apologize’
In response to the backlash, Qantas confirmed the technical issue, acknowledging that individual movie selection wasn’t available due to a malfunction. The airline explained that the crew had tried to fix the issue but was unable to. After realizing that Daddio was inappropriate for a general audience, the crew switched the movie to a more suitable, family-friendly one.
Qantas also confirmed that they are reviewing how the movie was chosen and what could be done to prevent this from happening again.
Could This Happen Again? Airlines Must Take Care
The incident raises serious questions about in-flight entertainment systems. When technical issues arise, it’s crucial for airlines to ensure that any content played is suitable for all ages. Family-friendly content should be the default in situations where individual movie selection isn’t available.
For passengers, this incident has left many wondering whether more caution should be taken when it comes to in-flight entertainment, especially when children are on board. Qantas, now reviewing their processes, will likely be more vigilant in the future.
