A Night of Terror in Minneapolis!
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A Minnesota man has admitted his role in a terrifying series of home invasions that left Minneapolis residents in fear. On Wednesday, Kamau Evans, age 32 from Mankato, pled guilty in U.S. District Court to possession of a firearm as a felon after a violent rampage that ended in a standoff with police.
Breaking and Entering: A Family’s Nightmare
On January 14, chaos erupted when Evans broke into an apartment in south Minneapolis.
A woman and her two children barely escaped after Evans smashed a window and crawled into their bedroom. The family fled in terror, leaving their home behind.
Hostage Situation in North Minneapolis
But Evans wasn’t done. He then forced his way into a second home in north Minneapolis, shattering a sliding glass door.
Inside, he assaulted several residents, including an elderly woman and a young child, whom he held hostage, threatening their lives.
Police Confrontation: Shots Fired
Minneapolis Police responded swiftly, pulling one of the victims from the house. As officers advanced behind a ballistic shield, Evans fired at them from the top of a stairwell. The situation escalated rapidly, with bullets flying in the home.
Dramatic Escape and Capture
In a desperate attempt to evade capture, Evans leapt from a bathroom window and ran through the backyard. His escape was short-lived.
Police apprehended him near the garage, where they also found a SCCY model CPX-1 9mm semiautomatic pistol.
Brutal Assaults and Injuries
Evans’s violent spree didn’t stop at gunfire. He attempted to shoot several victims and brutally pistol-whipped one, leaving her needing seven staples in her head. The extent of his rampage left the community in shock.
The Law Catches Up: A Felon’s Downfall
Evans, a convicted felon from a 2002 case, is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. His brazen disregard for the law led to his plea of guilty to one count of possession of a firearm as an armed career criminal.
Sentencing is set for August 22, where Evans will face the consequences of his night of terror. For more details, visit the Hennepin County Jail website here.
Reminder: All parties are considered innocent before proven guilty.
