You’ll Never Believe What The Rest Of America Thinks About Minneapolis Parks!
๐ณ Minneapolis and St. Paul parks are back in the spotlight! Find out how they rank nationwide in the eyes of the Trust for Public Land. ๐ #MinneapolisNews #MinnesotaNews #MinneapolisParks
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – In a thrilling turn of events, Minneapolis has surpassed its neighbor St. Paul to secure the second position in the latest national ranking of public park systems. Yup, Minneapolis is 2nd and St. Paul is 3rd for the BEST parks in the United States! I’d call that a big win for Minnesota!
The Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit organization, annually evaluates park systems across the country based on factors such as access, acreage, and spending. While Washington, D.C., continues to reign supreme at the top, the competition between the Twin Cities remains fierce.
๐ Minneapolis’ Winning Strategy
Minneapolis’ ascent from the third to the second spot can be attributed to the city’s concerted efforts to enhance park accessibility and amenities for its residents. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has been diligently working on projects such as upgrading bathrooms, developing the Upper Harbor park along the North Minneapolis riverfront, and incorporating two dog parks previously managed by a nonprofit. These improvements have not gone unnoticed, as they have contributed significantly to the city’s improved ranking.
๐ฟ St. Paul’s Silver Lining
Although St. Paul may have slipped to the third position, its residents need not despair. The margin between the two cities remains incredibly close, and St. Paul’s parks continue to be among the nation’s finest. With an impressive 99% of its population living within a 10-minute walk of a park, St. Paul far exceeds the national average of 76%. This high level of access demonstrates the city’s dedication to offering its residents abundant green spaces and recreational facilities.
๐๏ธ The Equity Challenge
While Minneapolis has made significant strides in improving park access, the city recognizes that there is still work to be done. The Trust for Public Land’s inclusion of park equity as a ranking factor in 2021 highlighted the need for greater attention to racial and economic disparities in park access and quality.
The Minneapolis Park Board has been investing in initiatives to address these issues, but as Sophie Vorhoff, the Minnesota state director of the Trust for Public Land, notes, ensuring that communities of color and lower-income neighborhoods have access to the same caliber of parks remains a priority.
๐ฎ Looking Ahead: St. Paul’s Potential Comeback
As we look to the future, St. Paul may have an ace up its sleeve. The city’s recently approved sales tax hike includes provisions for park improvements, which could propel St. Paul back to the second spot or even catapult it to the top of the rankings in the coming years.
With both cities constantly striving to enhance their park systems, the friendly rivalry between Minneapolis and St. Paul is set to continue, much to the benefit of their residents and visitors alike. Happy travels!
