St. Paul, MN – Hey there, movie buffs and music lovers! Get ready to party like it’s 1984 because Minnesota is gearing up to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Prince’s legendary movie, “Purple Rain”!
A Piece of Prince History π
You know that super cool purple trench coat Prince rocked in the movie? The one with the studded shoulder and the fancy white ruffled shirt? Well, guess what? You can see it up close and personal at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. The best part? It’s FREE to see this rare Prince relic!
The iconic outfit, designed by the talented trio of Louis Wells, Vaughn Terry, and Marie France, will be on display in the lobby of the Gale Family Library – which is located at the Minnesota History Center: 345 W Kellogg Blvd, Level 2, St Paul, MN 55102. Find out more at their website here.
When and Where to Catch the Action π
Mark your calendars, folks! The exhibit will be open from May 9 through July 27, 2024 every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Minnesota History Center is the place to be if you want to soak up some serious Prince vibes.
By the way, did you know you can visit Prince’s private home and personal recording studio? It’s true! Paisley Park is located in the Twin Cities suburb of Chanhassen and is an awesome museum run by the same folks behind Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis.

For those who might not know, “Purple Rain” was the movie that made Prince a household name around the world. Shot mostly in Minneapolis (with many scenes filmed at the iconic First Avenue nightclub in downtown), the film and its incredible soundtrack earned Prince three Grammys and an Oscar!
The movie gave us unforgettable hits like “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and of course, the title track, “Purple Rain.” These songs have been making us dance, sing, and feel all the feels for four decades now!

The Minnesota History Center has been keeping Prince’s legacy alive since 1987 when they acquired the “Purple Rain” outfit along with other awesome Prince memorabilia. It’s like a time capsule of pure awesomeness!
