Indianapolis, IN – Listen up, folks! The clock is ticking, and we’ve got a big deadline coming up. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a Real ID or another federally approved ID to hop on a domestic flight. That’s right, your regular old driver’s license won’t cut it anymore.

🆔 What the Heck is a Real ID Anyway?

So, what’s this Real ID thing all about? Well, back in 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act to beef up security standards for state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses. This came after the 9/11 Commission made some recommendations to keep us all safer.

✈️ Flying Domestically? Real ID is Your Ticket!

If you’re planning on flying within the U.S., you’ll need to get your hands on a Real ID. But don’t worry, you won’t need both a Real ID and a passport – just one or the other will do the trick. And if you’ve got an Enhanced Driver’s License from Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, or Vermont, you’re already good to go!

🌎 Jetting Off to Another Country? Stick with Your Passport

Now, if you’re flying to another country, your trusty passport is still your best bet. The Real ID is just for domestic travel and getting into certain federal buildings. So, don’t toss your passport in the trash just yet!

📅 Deadline Extended

Originally, the Real ID deadline was set for May 3, 2023, but thanks to the pesky COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been pushed back to May 7, 2025. That means you’ve got a little extra time to get your ducks in a row.

📑 Getting Your Real ID: What You’ll Need

Ready to get your Real ID? Head on down to your local DMV office and fill out the online application. You’ll need to upload some documents and then bring them with you to the DMV to seal the deal. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your full legal name

  • Your Social Security number

  • Proof of lawful status

Keep in mind that each state in the Midwest (and elsewhere in the country) might have a few extra requirements, so check with your DMV to make sure you’ve got everything you need. For even more info visit the DHS website here.
