Detroit Lakes, MN – A whimsical art installation is taking shape in this cute northern Minnesota town. Danish artist Thomas Dambo has set his sights on this charming corner of the world, bringing his famous GIANT Trolls to life using recycled materials.
The Magical Mission π§ββοΈβ¨
Project 412, a local non-profit, has commissioned Dambo to create six larger-than-life Trolls in the Detroit Lakes and Frazee area. The goal? To elevate the cultural and economic vibrancy of the region while promoting environmental awareness and the joy of being outdoors.
Dambo’s Trolls have captured the hearts of people across the globe, with over 130 installations spanning Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States. Now, it’s Minnesota‘s turn to experience the magic!
Crafting the Colossal Creatures π¨πͺ
Building these gentle giants is no small feat. It takes a dedicated team of volunteers working alongside Dambo’s crew to bring the Trolls to life. The materials? A creative mix of structural wood, used pallets, and found decorations like tree branches and stones.
Many of the materials were rescued from local construction projects and donated by businesses and individuals in the community. The heads, hands, and feet of each Troll were carefully crafted by Dambo’s team in Denmark before being shipped to Minnesota for assembly. π©π°π¦
Become a Troll Hunter! ππΊοΈ
Part of the excitement surrounding the Trolls is the adventure of finding them. Dambo provides clever riddles and clues to guide visitors on their quest. The journey begins at Alexa the Elixir in Detroit Lakes City Park, where a kiosk will point you in the right direction.
As you explore the Detroit Lakes area, keep your eyes peeled for three hidden “portals” in Fargo, North Dakota, Detroit Lakes, and Perham, Minnesota. These sneaky spots add an extra layer of intrigue to your Troll-hunting expedition! π΅οΈββοΈπΏ
Hug a Troll, Snap a Selfie πΈπ€
Once you’ve found these friendly forest dwellers, don’t be shy! The Trolls are meant to be touched, hugged, and photographed. Just remember to tag Jack and Kitty, Project 412 and Thomas Dambo on social media when you share your snapshots.Β
While climbing on the Trolls is discouraged (we want to keep them in tip-top shape for years to come), you’re welcome to walk around them and take in their unique details. And yes, your furry friends are invited too β just keep them on a leash and clean up after them! πΎπ©
A Legacy of Love and Laughter ππ
The Trolls will make their grand debut in mid-June 2024, ready to welcome visitors from near and far. Although they’re made from recycled materials and will eventually return to the earth, Project 412 is committed to maintaining and caring for these gentle GIANTS for as long as possible.
