TUCSON, AZ — Two elderly hikers from Arizona found themselves in a desperate fight for survival Thursday after becoming stranded in the unforgiving Tucson Mountains, where scorching temperatures and rough terrain nearly claimed their lives.
Race Against Time
When severe dehydration left the pair unable to move, a specialized U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO) team swooped in with their Black Hawk helicopter for a daring rescue operation.
The situation turned critical as the hikers battled severe muscle cramps and extreme exhaustion. Pima County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue teams, already on scene, knew ground evacuation would be too risky given the treacherous landscape.
Heroes from Above
In a display of precision flying, AMO’s elite aircrew performed multiple hoist operations to extract the stranded hikers.
An emergency medical technician and rescue specialist descended from the hovering Black Hawk to prepare the victims for their lifesaving airlift.
Safe at Last
The dramatic rescue concluded at a nearby trailhead, where waiting National Park Service rangers and sheriff’s deputies provided additional medical care to the exhausted hikers.
This rescue marks another example of AMO’s vital role in protecting lives across America’s challenging terrains.
Their specialized teams maintain constant readiness for emergencies throughout the United States and its territories, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
