LA PLACE, LA — A routine crawfishing trip nearly ended in tragedy for an 82-year-old man who became deeply stuck in thick Louisiana mud and spent hours alone, waist-deep, and unable to call for help.

What Was Supposed To Be a Peaceful Outing

The man, who has not been publicly identified, headed out alone for a quiet afternoon of crawfishing near La Place, just off Interstate 10. But when he tried to cross a deceptively deep and soft patch of marshland, he found himself sinking fast. Mud surrounded his legs and quickly trapped him in place, making it impossible for him to escape on his own.

To make matters worse, the man’s phone had been damaged by water and no longer worked, cutting off his only lifeline.

The Search Begins As Night Falls

His family began to worry when they hadn’t heard from him for more than eight hours and alerted authorities. St. John the Baptist Parish deputies launched a full search. After spotting his parked vehicle around 11:30 p.m., they deployed drones to scan the nearby wooded area.

Just 0.2 miles from his car, the man was finally located—cold, exhausted, but still conscious.

Pulled From the Mud, Rushed to the ER

Deputies quickly fitted him with a lifejacket and used a rope system to carefully extract him from the gripping mud. Once free, he was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

Sheriff Mike Tregre praised the swift actions of his team and reminded residents of the real dangers lurking in Louisiana’s backcountry. He urged locals to always share their location and expected return time when venturing outdoors, no matter how short the trip.

Moment for Reflection

Even the most familiar places can hold unexpected dangers, especially when we venture out alone. This man’s survival reminds us that preparedness and communication are acts of love—for ourselves and for those who care about us. Whether on a quiet fishing trip or a walk through the woods, it’s wise to keep safety close and loved ones informed. In moments of silence and solitude, may we never forget that we are never truly alone.
