Picture this: a towering structure that looks just like a husked ear of corn, proudly standing near Graham Park. This 151-foot-tall marvel was constructed back in 1931. Why, you ask? Well, it pays tribute to the veggies processed at the Reid, Murdoch, and Co. food cannery, which sprang to life in 1929.

But it’s not just for show; this water tower served an essential purpose. With a capacity of 50,000 gallons, it quenched the thirst of the canning operation. At night, it sparkled like a star, thanks to ten spotlights. That made it a handy guide for the Army Air Corps and Air Force, helping them locate a nearby airfield during the 1930s to the 1960s.
Over the years, the cannery changed hands, from Libby Foods in 1948 to Seneca Foods in 1982. Seneca ran the show for three fruitful decades before calling it quits in 2018. In 2019, Olmsted County swooped in to purchase the property. While the canning facility bid adieu, the water tower stood strong, becoming a cherished attraction and a photo hotspot for everyone.
Fast forward to 2021, and the tower got a makeover – a fresh coat of paint and some extra TLC. That year, it even scooped up the People’s Choice Award in Tnemec’s “Tank of the Year” Contest. Talk about a star-studded performance!
